Innovation in renewable electricity generation

The Ocean Harvester is based on a patented mechanical power takeoff (transmission) using a counterweight, which enables very cost efficient energy production from ocean waves. The counterweight is a simple and low cost accumulator with sufficient capacity to smooth power over several wave periods.

OHT´s power takeoff and control system makes it possible to capture peak energy from the waves without over sizing the system. Captured energy that exceeds the generator capacity is temporarily stored in the counterweight and then fed to the generator when the captured energy is lower. This has not been possible with earlier counterweight technologies.

How it works

The environmental web magazine WorldChanging.com published in December 2008 an artist’s impression of the Ocean Harvester, which explains the basic technology in a very simplified but intuitive way.
